100+ teams to compete in the month-long rink football extravaganza.
Defending champions Our Lady of Gloria, Byculla 'A' will have their work cut out as they head into the new season alongside one hundred and three other Parish teams representing every nook and cranny of Mumbai's massive expanse. The tournament, widely regarded as the premier rink football tournament in the city, is played exclusively under floodlights on the Willingdon Gymkhana tennis courts. What makes the tournament quite literally in a league of its own is the parish-wise segregation of teams which attracts huge crowds to the venue and ensures that there is more than just bragging rights and pride at stake with every win. Pitch-side commentators Xavier Almeida and Edgar D'Mello provide the play-by-play quips that has now become legendary among the Willingdon regulars. With last year's effortless 7-3 thrashing of Salvation 'B', Our Lady of Gloria, Byculla has emerged as a powerhouse in recent editions of the tournament following a lengthy stint at the helm by Kalina's Our Lady of Egypt during the early part of the decade - an unstoppable team lead by ex-International footballer and current Air India coach Godfred Pereira. Though teams from the footballing hubs of Dadar (Salvation, St. Paul's), Borivali (I C Colony), Bandra (St. Andrew's), Malad (St. Anne's, Orlem), Amboli (St. Blaise) are the traditional big names expected to pull through to the final stages, new contenders are slowly emerging from lesser known regions every year. The new season kicks off on Monday, 23rd August 2010 at 6:30 pm with the opening ceremony. Willingdon Inter-Parish Fixtures 2010: (Right-click to download)
